Remington Owners, Remington Year of Manufacture Codes maybe found on the barrel of your Remington rifle or shotgun on the left side, just forward of the receiver; the first letter of the Code is the month of manufacture, followed by one or two letters which are the year of manufacture. Remington serial #ed all their rifles, I have a M24 Gallery Gun that was built in the early '20s, and it's a got a serial #. The Model 12's # is probably on the tang or under the front of the receiver, like my M24. 5, 1909, MAR. 8, 1910, NOV. 16, 1912 / Remington / TRADE MARK”, the left is marked “22 SHORT, LONG / OR LONG RIFLE / DU” with two inspection marks. The left side of the receiver is marked “MODEL 12-C” and the serial number, which is found again on the left side of the frame, when the rifle is taken down.
The inside of the receiver, visible through the ejection port, has two inspection marks. The butt plate is marked “REMINGTON / UMC” in circle and “TRADE MARK”. The front sight is marked “D.W.
KING”, the rear is marked “D.W. PENDING”; the slide-step elevator base is marked from 1 to 5 for elevation adjustment.Barrel Length: 24” OctagonalSights / Optics: The rifle has a D.W. King sight configuration. The front sight is a long blade with rounded edges and a serrated rear face, integral to a base that is dovetailed onto the barrel and the rear sight is a “U” notched leaf in a buckhorn base that is slide-step adjustable for elevation; the leaf is screw set and micro-adjustable for elevation. The slide-step elevator base is marked from 1 to 5 for elevation adjustment.Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are a two piece walnut set with nice wood to metal fit and grain variation.
The forend has grooves for traction and shows a few faint compression marks. The butt stock has a semi-pistol grip; the varnish looks to be original, though there are oddities to the texture, indicating a bit of solvent or some other material had come into contact with the stock at some point; this resulted in some of the varnish having been lifted off of the wood. Sleep missing windows 10. There are a few scattered light marks and a small unrepaired crack at the butt plate on the right flank. The wood at the frame has darkened from handling and there is a dark spot by the inlet portion of the butt plate on the left flank. The LOP measures 13 ¾” from the front of the trigger to the back of the crescent carbine-style metal butt plate; the plate has some spots of oxidation and finish thinning, rating in about Very Good condition. The stocks rate in about Very Good overall condition.Type of Finish: Blued, with case colored butt plate screws.Finish Originality: The finishes are original.Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is highly pronounced with a small amount of wear. There is no erosion.Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 75% of its metal finish.
The balance of the finish shows scattered areas of light surface oxidation with instances of pin prick erosion and the barrel is shifting to plum patina. The edges of the frame and barrel have some thinning, the magazine tube and slide arm have operational wear. The sights have built spots of oxidation. The butt plate has patina and a drizzle of light oxidation and handling marks. The screw heads are sharp.
The markings are crisp. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good condition.Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The rifle’s trigger breaks crisp and features a simple takedown method for storage and maintenance; the frame has a superbly tight fit to the receiver. We have not fired this rifle.
As with all previously owned firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.Box, Paperwork & Accessories: NoneOur Assessment: This Remington Model 12C was made in 1927 and is equipped with D.W. The butt stock varnish looks to be original, though there are oddities to the texture, indicating a bit of solvent or some other material had come into contact with the stock at some point; this resulted in some of the varnish having been lifted off of the wood.
There are a few scattered light marks and a small unrepaired crack at the butt plate on the right flank. About 75% of the metal finishes remain with crisp lettering and the bore is bright with sharp rifling and no erosion. This rifle has survived quite well for its age and should make for a splendid takedown rifle that can take some longer shots with the aftermarket sights. Please see our pictures and good luck.
