Click to expand.Usually I'd agree. I did about 3000 miles in Germany and France and while it was sometimes a little fraught, doing a quick stop then a full comfort break was OK. I'll ride 400-500 miles a day, so Start-petrol stop-meal break-petrol stop- fill for next day works well. Then I did a couple of Welsh rallies that involve coming home on a Sunday. As you havn't a clue where the rally site is half the time, you fill up on the Saturday say 30 miles out, get a bad GPS run and arrive with only 100 in the main tank. Next day when Wales is closed you are over 100 miles from certain supply and when you do get some I'm still more than a tankfull away from home.

Michael, I believe the 2006 Bonneville has the smaller 3.9 gallon gas tank, which I believe the badges will not fit the curve. If you have the larger 4.2 gallon tank, there is a good chance they will work. What you need is the larger tank AND the threaded holes under the plastic badges.
Three stops, one to empty a Jerry can in 250 miles adds a fair bit of time. Hence I went for the auxilliary tank. It's more about mental health than the risk of having to walk. If they are doing to fit such a small tank, a fuel gauge/range meter/backwards running trip meter would be an alternative solution.Andy. I don't really mind that you can only get 130-140 miles on a tank, after two hours or so on any bike its nice to get off and walk around for a couple minutes anyway.

The only concerning part are those long stretches here in the US where there isn't gasoline every 130-140 miles. I guess a cheap solution would be to just carry a small gas can with you of a gallon or two. Otherwise, I think the look of the gas tank is just right for the bike, if it were any bigger I think it would break up the lines of the Bonneville in a bad way. The daft thing is the hugely expensive Norman Hyde tank is a gallon bigger but the same outline size. The standard tank is somehow related to brochure weights or a production issue IMHO. I haven't seen a NH off a bike to see where it puts the extra.I'm not a fan of massive tanks. I had 27 litres on an F650 that was good for close to 420 miles.

- A bigger tank. Q: I have a 1979 Triumph Bonneville Special T140D. I am interested in using it for touring and am pondering an upgrade to the U.K.-spec gas tank, which has about twice the fuel capacity of my stock U.S.-spec tank.
I dread to think how much fuel I wasted going to work with 20-odd kg's in unncessary litres sloshing about, but I got blase about range to the point of almost running out in Norway! (+1 to petrol stoves and Rotax BMW's doing 90 mpg at 50 mph in that case).IMHO 20 litres would suit the Bonneville, get it safe to 200 miles.Andy. Click to expand.mine was kind of like that, except without the drinking and recreational drugs, and with a 65 year old accountant who happens to be my father, and instead of europe we rode around the state of florida. So, in reality, probably nothing like your trip.we had a really good time, took all back roads, and the bonneville seemed to excel at this kind of touring. Of course it was a rental, so we were obligated to flog it a little. The bike didn't seem to mind at all. My brother's still rolling change, saving up for one.
He called it the perfect bike. I wish I could answer your question with the confidence of somebody who actually remembers, but I can't. Between the two Bonnevilles I had, both were jetted with after-market pipes. My riding style hasn't differed over the years, nor has my gas mileage on modified bikes (intake/fueling/exhaust). I customarily have gotten, and still get, 38 to 40 mpg (REGARDLESS of bike.), you might know the capacity of the Bonnie's tank and can therefore calculate how far I went before having to top off. I'm thinking I mighta hit the reserve prior to the 120 mile mark.I also ALWAYS take my bikes beyond the reserve having to be switched over or the 'low fuel light' coming on.

I fill a couple Seafoam cans with gas, put 'em on the bike or backpack, then go out and intentionally run out of gas. That way I know how far I can go before going dry.

We are researching this issue and will post resultshere.4) Can use late(pre 1968).5) with twoeach screws 82-7888 and 83-1339; but earlywith two each 82-4129 and 82-7888 screws will align, but the curvature is notcorrect - this may be a problem with the current batch of badges and not thetank.6) Uses withsealing washers 70-7351 and 83-0002.7) Usesback to 1967; pre 1967 uses the same kit plus rear frame bolt 82-5337.8) It is highly recommended that all fuel tanksbe fitted, pressure tested, and sealed before painting. We recommendTwo part epoxy, no solvents, so ground shippable mail and UPS. All hardwaremust be properly installed and tightened accordingly. Please pressure test gastanks prior to painting. All partsmust be fitted prior to painting the tank to be sure that no problems areencountered later. Please note, although we only sell parts from reliable manufacturers, warrantiesare limited only to replacement of defective parts, and no labour of any type, including paint jobs or return shipping, is ever covered.Further Notes February 2009: These havebeen made as close to the original as possible, and the tank badge fitment issuementioned was a slight gap with some of the reproduction badges necessitatingsome fine 'fitting' to eliminate any gap where they meet. I think it is as muchan issue with the badges as with the tanks, and suspect original badges may fita hair better. Due to a thicker gauge steel used in manufacture of these tanksto ensure they meet current specs, making them more bulletproof than theoriginals, the beading is a tighter fit, so should be trial fitted beforepainting and may sit a hair higher.
The only other issue noted was that thetanks sit a hair higher in the front. While this is not a problem with rubbermounted bars, it might mean that tank mounting rubbers on a bike with solidhandlebar mounts on the top crown should be shortened to prevent any possibleinterference between tank top and bars.
